Chelsea have won the title 5 times, with all their titles being clinched since the takeover of the club by Roman Abramovich in 2003. Their worst league finish was 14 in the 1993-94 season, and they finished 11th thrice in the 1992-93, 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons. Since the takeover of the club by Roman, they finished only once outside of the top 6, in the 2015-16 season, which also is their worst finish in the league since the buy out. Roman's buy out had an almost immediate impact on the club's performances, as they finished second in the year of the buyout. Jose Mourinho was appointed the manager of the club at the start of the 2004-05 season, and he orchestrated two consecutive Premier League titles in the following two years. Chelsea have had a revolving door of managers during the Abramovich era, which saw the club have 15 different managers in 19 seasons, with Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink having had 2 stints at the club. Mourinho has been their most successful manager in the Premier League, having won the title three times, in the 2004-05, 2005-06, and 2014-15 seasons. The two other titles were won by Carlo Ancelotti in the 2009-10 season, and by Antonio Conte in the 2016-17 season. Ownership of the club has changed in for the 2022-23 season, with the Roman selling to a consortium led by Todd Boehly, Clearlake Capital, Mark Walter and Hansjörg Wyss.

The performances of the team since their last title win in the 2016-17 season have fallen off, as the team have entered into a phase of rebuild.
